“RETIREMENT SEMINAR RESULTS” The Fall issue of The Cardinal looked forward to a Retirement Seminar. It was to be held, October 12, by the Lambton Seniors Association with funding by Health Canada through a program called “New Horizons”. October 12 has passed. What happened? The seminar did take place. Dr. Joseph A. Tindale, a professor at the University of Guelph gave the keynote address. This was at the Sarnia Yacht Club, itself a “senior” celebrating 75 years of service to the area, this year. More than 50 retirees, with a wide variety of work backgrounds, from all over Lambton County raised the “issues and concerns” that they had experienced as they began retirement. Mr. Jerry Vopicka helped ensure orderly presentation of the ideas, as chief facilitator. Jim Weir, popular CHOK radio personality, was Master of Ceremonies. About 75 problems were raised. These were then graded, and just over 30 were judged to be of priority importance by more than one member of the group. Of course, a few of these, under a dozen, were felt to be of greatest importance. These issues, in greater detail, will be posted elsewhere in this LSA newsletter. For those without computer access, either a short summary or the full report can be obtained by calling the Lambton Seniors Association office at (519) 339-8866. It was fairly easy to sort the concerns into four bundles – Health, Financial, Housing and Social. You would probably have guessed those general concerns, even if the seminar had never been held. The seminar, however, gives us much more. No one can fix “bad roads”. A very few people can readily repair “a pothole on Niagara Street, in Wyoming”. It is the detail provided by the 75 specific issues and concerns that will allow progress to be made. The Lambton Seniors Association has already begun to consider ways it might reduce those concerns. It has begun to share its findings with other service providers in the County. Indeed, a report has gone to Health Canada and the insights within it may help retired persons right across the country.
